Thematic Maps
Show spatial aspects of information or of a phenomenon
**
Chlorpleth
Shows data in a color scale
Chloropleths are bad
- Outliers will turn an entire state dark
- Ex Atlanta’s black neighborhoods make the whole state of Georgia dark on a chloropleth scale
Dot distribution
- Shows the distribution of things
- One dot represents something
- Problems
- Majorities overrun minorities
- Doesn’t show everything
- You can’t see the asian populations
- There isnt even a color for MENA immigrants(should be visibile in NYC and Detroit)
Graduated Symbols
- They are ugly
- Pretty similar to chloropleth
- Not a Dot distribution
- Big circles
- not small circles
Isoline
- Uses lines that connect points of equal value to depict variations in the data across space
- Where lines are close together, change is rapid
